Screenwriting, Producing Entertainment and Sex
Screenwriting, producing entertainment and sex have threads in common that do relate creatively.
Sex experts say selfish people make for bad lovers because they only care about their needs and not their partners. As long as they are satisfied they could care less if their partner had a good time.
The same can be said for screenwriting and producing entertainment. When a screenwriter or entertainment producer only cares about creating something that entertains them they neglect viewer audience needs.
I wrote a screenplay in the past that went to a well-known A-List agency. I was a selfish screenwriter back then only thinking about myself and not the viewing audience.
The screenplay was a personal story that I wanted to tell thinking the viewing audience would be as interested in it as I was. I was wrong.
The coverage department for this big agency (William Morris Endeavor) came back that the characters and dialogue were sharp, but the agency passed on it because they were brutally honest that it played better as a stage play and not a movie that would appeal to the masses. They said the story was too small.
The coverage was right. This respected agent was kind enough to give me a call to give me some sound advice after he got the coverage notes. In a nutshell it boiled down to write movies with viewers in mind. Just because you love a story doesn’t mean movie viewers will.
I know he was coming from a place where he handled major clients in the studio system, but it made sense. I appreciated he took the time to even call me after the coverage department recommended pass on the screenplay.
I did write the screenplay without thinking of viewers. It can be described as being a selfish lover. I went back to read the screenplay again based off coverage notes from three different readers at WME.
I saw exactly what they were talking about. I wrote the screenplay only thinking of my creative needs and not viewers.
I was only writing the screenplay for my own personal payoff and forgot it was entertainment that would be meant to satisfy a variety of viewers not just me.
After that I found a new approach to screenwriting and producing entertainment that does put viewers first. Screenwriters and producers that are able to balance their creative ideas to appeal to viewers are golden.
Without original ideas from screenwriters and producers entertainment would get boring fast. I know everyone has an opinion like an A-Hole, but in my opinion when writing a screenplay or producing entertainment take some thought of the movie viewers wants.
Try to avoid being a selfish creative lover when screenwriting and producing entertainment. The best is when you climax creatively with your audience. This is indie filmmaker Sid Kali typing FADE OUT
